Everybody needs a personal pitch, now there’s a process to create it in 7 easy steps

Seth Godin once said "we are all marketers". Whether you are wanting a promotion, a new job, building you own business or just convincing someone about your great idea, you need to practice your pitch.

Starting your own business or making a big and scary leap in your career is often something we do because we dream of a certain outcome or lifestyle. But whether we realise it or not, it is just as much a journey of personal development and transformation. Placing yourself outside of your comfort zone on a daily basis means you are going to build new muscles, it’s inevitable.

I have found that the most efficient way to nail that pitch is to practice out loud to a camera. When you watch yourself speaking it out loud it becomes so evident where you are not believing yourself! And if you are not believing yourself, do you think someone else will?

I had to learn this skill when I started my own business and I came up with a 7 step process that makes it easy, fun and pain-free. And you can use it too! You don't have to read books or go to pitch classes, all you need is a smartphone with a camera and a playful attitude.

As an example, in the past few years I have introduced myself to hundreds of new people in client meetings, talks, community groups and investor meetings. I used to feel anxious and had to prepare and think about what to say, so it was a bit of a struggle. I always like to find ways of creating shortcuts and making things more fun and simple, so I came up with a process for preparing my pitch and also getting it on video in no time, without all the struggle and pressure.

I used to be very self-critical and self-conscious and hated to hear my own voice, let alone video played back to me. But through practicing and sharing with people I felt safe around, I realised what a powerful self coaching tool it is to create and watch videos of yourself. It's a journey of self-discovery through self-expression.

Don’t miss out on this chance to surprise yourself by how insightful you can be on camera and how a certain phrase really works, that’s another benefit. Video as self coaching tool can show you your genius and help you build confidence.

You are hereby invited to join my quirky universe where we combine playfulness with substance. Check out the short online course here: 7 simple steps to kickstart a confident delivery of your business message. Even if you've never done video before or are afraid to put yourself on camera.

I recorded this course while travelling round the world in digital nomad style, so the videos in there are shot in different places I stayed. You don’t need fancy equipment or professional studio to get your message across.

Are you camera shy and want a little challenge you can do right now?

Share your first video with a friend who is supportive. Keep it super simple the goal is to share a video no matter how “bad” you feel it is. Find the buttons on your phone or laptop and just say hi to the friend maybe tell them your name and where you are from. That’s it.

Here are some tips to make you look and feel your best:

  • Use natural light if possible (shoot in daylight outside, indoor facing a window, or in a car).

  • Smile - it’s amazing how much better you look when you smile, I promise 😁

  • The rest is inside your head. Are you someone who is self-critical and don’t like to watch or listen to yourself? Stop criticising yourself...I know, easier said than done, try to really look for something you LIKE in your video, something clever or insightful you said, a beautiful smile, excited energy. I also highly recommend this blogpost: DON’T BE YOUR OWN WORST CRITIC. BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND.

  • After you have shared, remember to CELEBRATE that you did it 💃🕺💪🙌
